<p>The Russell Theatre is a building in Maysville, Kentucky that was originally intended as a movie theater but has since been adapted for other uses. Construction of the Russell Theatre was announced by Maysville businessman Col. J. Russell Barbour in 1928. The structure costing $125,000 opened on December 4, 1930 with a showing of the movie "Whoopee," starring Eddie Cantor. The building site was previously occupied by wholesale grocery warehouses.</p><br>
<p>The structure is a freestanding, three-story building with a 80 ft by 165 ft rectangular footprint with an area of about 13,000 ft&sup2;. The exterior features a Spanish-Moorish Revival style with a tower on either end of the principal facade. The box office is finished in Rookwood tile. Although constructed as a movie theater, the Russell did have dressing rooms for live performers and an orchestra pit. The auditorium was decorated as a Mediterranean garden complete with Lombardy poplar and literary busts set into wall niches. A rainbow would appear over the stage at the end of the movie.</p><br>
<p>Col. Russell operated the theater until 1935 at which time operations were turned over to the Schine group. In 1953, the Russell theater presented the world premiere of Maysville native Rosemary Clooney&#39;s movie "The Stars are Singing". In the early 1970s, the Panther Group took over operations and repainted much of the jewel toned decoration with bright primary colors. The Panther Group continued to operate the theatre until 1983. In subsequent years, the building was used as a restaurant, a used furniture store, a used clothing store, and a newspaper utility building before its eventual close.</p><br>
<p>After its abandonment, strong storm winds ripped off a roof section and the damage was not immediately repaired. The interior plaster work was extensively damaged by subsequent exposure to rain. In 1995, a committee was formed to restore the building. The roof was repaired and the exterior appearance has been restored, but interior restoration is not complete.</p><br>
<p>Roundhill Crescent  is a late-19th-century housing development in Round Hill, an inner suburb of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. Partly developed in the 1860s with large terraced houses on a steeply sloping open hillside, the crescent—which "curves and changes height dramatically along its length"—was finished two decades later and now forms the centrepiece of the Round Hill conservation area. Smaller houses completed the composition in the 1880s, and Englands first hospital for the treatment of mental illness was founded in the crescent in 1905. The five original sets of houses from the 1860s have been listed at Grade II by English Heritage for their architectural and historical importance, and the crescent occupies a prominent place on Brightons skyline.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Brighton was originally a fishing village on the English Channel coast, with the chalk hills of the South Downs rising immediately behind. Its growth into a fashionable seaside resort and residential town began in the mid-19th century and continued, with some interruptions, for more than a century afterwards. The construction of railway lines to London and Lewes in the 1840s stimulated development on the higher ground behind the core of the old town.</p><br>
<p>Round Hill was a high, mostly undeveloped hill between the two valleys along which the main road and railway routes ran. Topped with a windmill since 1838, the only other development until the 1860s consisted of a few middle-class villas and the horseshoe-shaped Park Crescent at the bottom of the southern slope. This prestigious scheme was one of the last executed by prolific local architect Amon Henry Wilds. The opening of the railway led to the rapid construction of lower-class housing in the surrounding area, but the example set by Park Crescent encouraged developers to continue to introduce higher-quality, larger-scale residential schemes. The crescent form had been popular in Brighton and nearby Hove throughout the 19th century; Wilds&#39;s work represented the most recent example of the style already established at Adelaide, Hanover, Lewes, Montpelier and the pioneering Royal Crescents.</p><br>
<p>The arable land of the higher parts of the hill, mostly owned by Thomas Read Kemp and the Stanford family, was released for development in the 1860s. Kemp sold his land, but the Stanfords sought to develop their parts according to their own taste. They took inspiration from the high-class housing of Hanover Crescent (built between 1814 and 1823) and the mid-1850s terraced villas of Powis Square. In 1865, a crescent-shaped road was laid out on high ground on the northwest side of Upper Lewes Road, and several groups of large three- and four-storey terraced houses were built. and the adoption of some Italianate detailing. The gaps were filled in between 1880 and 1885 when smaller terraced houses, mostly of two storeys and featuring the canted bay windows and decorative mouldings characteristic of Brighton&#39;s Victorian residential architecture, The later houses were mostly built of cheap brick or bungaroosh—a low-quality composite material—which was then faced with protective render.</p><br>
<p>For six years in the early 20th century, one of the original 1860s houses was the site of a pioneering centre for the provision of mental healthcare. In 1905, number 101 was rented by Dr Helen Boyle, who had founded a dispensary in the nearby suburb of Hanover in 1899. She moved the dispensary to Roundhill Crescent and opened a 12-bed hospital alongside it, for the treatment of women and children with mental health problems. Named the Lewes Road Hospital and Dispensary for Women and Children, the facility was England&#39;s first hospital for the treatment of mental illness.</p><br>
<p>The five parts of Roundhill Crescent that were built in the 1860s were separately listed at Grade II by English Heritage on 2 March 1981. This status is given to "nationally important buildings of special interest". As of February 2001, they represented five of the 1,124 Grade II-listed buildings and structures, and 1,218 listed buildings of all grades, in the city of Brighton and Hove. The crescent also forms a central part (and "the most important architecturally") The 29.78 acre area was designated on 6 January 1977.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Roundhill Crescent forms a "majestic sweep" on the steep, visually prominent hillside, which can be seen from many parts of north and east Brighton. The "fine curving terraces of Regency-style houses" at each end of the road, Coming about 50 years after that architectural style&#39;s heyday, they represent its latest appearance in Brighton.</p><br>
<p>The groups of houses built in the mid-1860s, and now with listed status, are now numbered 1–13, 19 and 21, 23–37, 69 and 71 and 101–113. Only the group between 1 and 19 inclusive and the pair at 69 and 71 appeared on a mid-1870s map of Brighton, Numbers 1–13 are at the lowest point on the southwest side, after which the crescent begins to "curve and change height dramatically along its length,</p><br>
<p>The group at numbers 1–13 rise to three storeys and each have a three-window range. Each house is separated from its neighbour by pilasters running the full height of the building to a cornice. The bottom part of each pilaster is rusticated. The entrance and windows have decorative mouldings to their archivolt and architraves respectively. Each house has a large cast-iron balcony outside the first-floor window and some ironwork at second-floor level, forming guards outside the bracketed windows. Many of the mouldings, except at number 1, are no longer in their original condition. Number 1 also has dormer windows in the roof, and number 13 has a side entrance in an arched porch.</p><br>
<p>Numbers 19 and 21, originally part of the same terrace, are similar in style. Number 21 has lost much of its exterior decoration: none of the windows have mouldings or cast-iron window guards. Number 19 has an arched side entrance under an architraved porch. The houses at numbers 23–37 are also of the same style, but with two windows on each floor; all retain their original features, but some of the decorative mouldings have been modified on three of the buildings.</p><br>
<p>Numbers 69 and 71 are again of three storeys with a three-window range, stucco-clad and topped by a cornice and parapet in front of the roof. The treatment of the top of the dividing pilaster on number 71 is different: it lacks a bracket to the cornice. As with the other 1860s houses, they both have first-floor balconies with foliage-pattern ironwork.</p><br>
<p>The seven houses at numbers 101–113 also have three windows to each of three storeys, and the same general layout and materials. Some details are different on individual houses: there is no rustication to the pilasters at numbers 105 and 107; the cast-iron second-floor window-guards are absent on three houses; some mouldings are altered or absent; one of the pilasters at number 103 is decorated with an urn; and number 101&#39;s entrance is in a porch at the side.</p><br>
<p>The non-listed houses on the northwest side are mostly of the same height but lack many of the features shared by the listed buildings, in particular the "highly decorative" balconies. Eaves supported on brackets take the place of parapets as well. The southeast side of the crescent has two-storey houses with some variation in style. Many have lost their original slate roofs, but some 19th-century dormer windows have been retained. The insertion of modern exterior features such as replacement doors, windows and roofs has been restricted by an Article Four Direction, covering the whole Round Hill conservation area, since 2000.</p><br>
<p>Endicott Rock is a state park located on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in the Weirs Beach village of Laconia, New Hampshire. Its principal attraction is a large rock originally in the lake that was incised with lettering in 1652 by surveyors for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The rock provides definitive evidence of one of the earliest incursions of Europeans into the area.</p><br>
<p>For many years the rocks existence was unknown, until it was rediscovered in the 19th century when the Weirs Channel was dredged. The state then undertook to protect the rock from the elements, building a pavilion over it and stabilizing cracks in the rock with iron fittings. The markings on the rock include "IOHN ENDICUT GOV", a reference to John Endecott, who was then governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the initials of the surveyors. The colonys boundaries, according to its charter, were 3 mi north of the Merrimack River, and the rock was incorrectly believed by the English party to mark the northernmost head of the river (the headwaters of the Merrimack&#39;s main tributary, the Pemigewasset River, are significantly further north, but the survey party was misled by its Indian guides).</p><br>
<p>Admission to the small park is free and offers picnic facilities. (The parking fee in the immediate vicinity is $10.) Materials from the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation sometimes identify the site as a historic site, and sometimes as a state park. A rectangular area surrounding the rock and its sheltering pavilion were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>Lochlea or Lochlie  was situated in a low-lying area between the farms and dwellings of Lochlea and Lochside in the Parish of Tarbolton, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch was natural, sitting in a hollow created by glaciation. The loch waters ultimately drained via Fail Loch, the Mill Burn, and the Water of Fail. It is well documented due to the presence of a crannog, excavated and documented circa 1878, and its association with the poet Robert Burns who lived here for several years whilst his father was the tenant. Lochlea lies two and a half miles north east of Tarbolton, and just over 3 miles northwest of Mauchline.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The loch also recorded as Lochly, Lochlee and Lochlie may derive its name from Liath, Gaelic for the Grey Loch. It was once much more extensive and changes in the water level are indicated by successive alterations identified within the site&#39;s crannog.</p><br>
<p>The Duke of Portland abolished thirlage in mid-19th century, making Millburn Mill, and its head of water, Lochlea, redundant, resulting in active attempts at drainage causing its demise circa 1840. The lands became part of the fields of Lochlea Farm. The waters still contributed to the flow to Fail Mill that stood on the rivulet of the Water of Fail and survived into the 20th century. Much of the surrounding lands in the area and those Lochlea originally belonged to the monks from Fail Monastery.</p><br>
<p>William Muir was the tenant of the Mill of Fail at the time of Robert Burns.</p><br>
<p>Blaeus map of 1654 clearly shows the loch and indicates that it was somewhat smaller, less than half the size, of Fail Loch. Roys map of 1747 shows the loch and indicates a Lochleehill. Thomson records a Lochbar.</p><br>
<p>In 1842 drainage was underway and it was being converted into arable land and the associated mill was abandoned.</p><br>
<p>The early Ordnance Survey maps show the site as fully drained, however drainage is now inadequate and the area is becoming re-established as a seasonal loch.</p><br>
<p>Shaw relates in the 1950s that "Lochlee, Fail Loch and Tarbolton Loch are no longer so full of water as when they were required to supply water for the meal mills, and gave good skating and curling in a hard winter. They are now to a large extent drained away, but are still the haunt of snipe, goose, duck, and swan."</p><br>
<h3>Drainage</h3><br>
<p>Although the loch&#39;s drainage may have begun in the 18th century when Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, was pursuing a number of agricultural improvements on his extensive estates and other landowners followed his example, drainage work may have taken place in the 1740s as part of the improvements undertaken to provide employment for Irish estate workers during the Irish potato famines of the 1740s and the mid 19th centuries. Many drainage schemes also date to the end of World War I when many soldiers returned en masse to civilian life.</p><br>
<p>The loch may have survived during the Burns family&#39;s time as Robert and Gilbert grew flax and probably used the loch as a retting pond for the preparation of the flax.</p><br>
<h3>The Crannog</h3><br>
<p>This artificial island was mainly visible in the summer months and lay about 75 yards from the southern bank of the loch. Despite its prominence during Robert Burns&#39;s time, he made no recorded reference to it. and the re-discovery at this time generated enough interest to spark an excavation; the site and Lochlea Farm were owned by the Duke of Portland and his Mr Turner, his factor, helped to organise the excavations, together with Mr. Cochrane-Patrick of Woodside, Beith. Much of the wood associated with the crannog was that of oak, hazel and birch, together with alder and poplar. Animals present included sheep, roe deer, red deer, reindeer, pig, and horse.</p><br>
<p>The crannog had several separate periods of occupation. Among the finds was a 9th-century ringed pin, and also several finds of 16th- or 17th-century origin, such as a brass mounted knife and a number of iron implements. It measured overall circa 33 m east-west by 23 m transversely, with its centre at NS 4574 3027.</p><br>
<h3>The Burns family connection</h3><br>
<p>Lochlie or Lochlea, Robert Burns used both versions, became his home in 1777 when his father William Burnes moved here from Mount Oliphant. The 130-acre farm and loch were owned by David McLure, an Ayr merchant. Burns moved to Mossgiel Farm near Mauchline in 1784, having spent some nine unhappy months away in Irvine learning flax processing. The farmland was very mossy and William Burnes had problems paying his rather high rent resulting in a successful court case that used up his savings and contributed to his premature death in February 1784. Burns is said to have roofed the barn himself and upon its demolition an engraved lintel from it was incorporated into the new farmhouse that replaced it. In 1879 the poet&#39;s home had become a barn.</p><br>
<p>William Burnes had a verbal agreement in the early 1780s to pay rent on the mill dam, referring to the land covered by the loch. David McClure had not yet drained this land and therefore William disputed the payment.</p><br>
<h3>Highland Mary</h3><br>
<p>Burns met Mary Campbell aka Highland Mary in church while he was living near Tarbolton. His song "Will ye go to the Indies, my Mary, And leave auld Scotia&#39;s shore?" suggests that they planned to emigrate to Jamaica together, however after a brief illness she died at Greenock. Burns and Mary Campbell apparently exchanged Bibles over a water course in the area around Coilsfield or Failford and possibly some sort of traditional Scottish matrimonial vows on the banks of the River Ayr, either at the Failford, where the Mauchline Burn has its confluence with the River Ayr, or near Coilsfield.</p><br>
<h2>Micro-history</h2><br>
<p>James Thom was born near Lochlea and went on to become a famous sculptor of Robert Burns and his contemporaries.</p><br>
<p>Lochlea 1 & 2 collieries were situated in the vicinity of the farm and operated from 1949 to 1973. Little visible remains survive.</p><br>
<p>Lochlea is the site of a wildfowl Wetland Bird Survey (WEBS) count.</p><br>
<p>The Soulsby Service Station is a historic service station in Mount Olive, Illinois. The station is located along historic USA Route 66 and is the oldest usable service station on the highway in Illinois. It serves as an example of the house and canopy gas station design.</p><br>
<p>Henry Soulsby built the station in 1926 after an injury forced him to leave the mining industry and operated it along with his children Russell and Ola Soulsby. His son Russell, a World War II naval communications technician, operated a radio and TV repair business out of the station as Interstate 55 diverted highway traffic away from the site in the late 1950s.</p><br>
<p>The station stopped pumping gas in 1991 and closed in 1993; plans currently exist to reopen it as a museum.</p><br>
<p>The Globe Building, Beebe Building and the Hotel Cecil are a trio of historic office/hotel buildings located in Downtown Seattle, Washington. The buildings occupy the entire west side of the 1000 block of 1st Avenue between Madison and Spring Streets. All three buildings were constructed from late 1900 to 1901 for Syracuse, New York investors Clifford Beebe and William Nottingham by the Clise Investment Company, headed by the prominent Seattlite James Clise , as a result of the Alaska Gold Rush which resulted in the construction of many such buildings in downtown Seattle. James Clise made other major contributions to the future of Seattle including convincing L.C. Smith to build the Smith Tower, securing land on Magnolia Bluff to build Fort Lawton and playing a major part in the Denny Regrade which reshaped the city. He was also active in securing the site for the University of Washington campus as well as the Lake Washington Ship Canal.</p><br>
<p>All three buildings were designed in Italian Renaissance Style for Clise by Max Umbrecht (1872–1955), a mostly residential architect who came to Seattle around 1900 from Syracuse, New York where he had worked briefly in the firm of Jeffery & Umbrecht. The two Northern buildings, both known at times as the Beebe buildings were built by Clise for owner Clifford D. Beebe, also of Syracuse while the Globe Building was built by Clise for William Nottingham&#39;s Globe Navigation Company.</p><br>
<p>This group of buildings consist of the last contiguous block of 1900s buildings on 1st Avenue between the Pioneer Square district and the Pike Place Market. Following a major restoration in early 1982, the buildings were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1983, the buildings were collectively listed as Seattle City Landmarks under the title "First Avenue Groups/Waterfront Center".</p><br>
<p>Since September 10, 1982 the buildings have been operated as the Alexis Hotel, owned by Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>Site</h3><br>
<p>Prior to the Great Seattle fire in 1889, the 1000 block of 1st Avenue, like most property on the west side of that street at the time, was mostly water, with several small buildings built on pilings. In 1884, the most substantial structure on the site was a two-story wood frame building on the Northwest corner of 1st and Madison with an adjoining warehouse. Further up the block were several small stores and a single dwelling where Spring Street would later extend. Of note at the time was the existence of an inclined plane that ran up the north side of Madison Street to 1st. This ramp was to be used for rolling fire engines to collect water for fighting fires. By 1888 the block was filled with warehouses and small manufacturing businesses including a mattress factory.</p><br>
<p>After the great fire, not much was built on the 1000 block and nothing more would be built as the Panic of 1893 took hold of the economy. 1893 Sanborn Maps show only the one-story brick building (filling the footprint of the Globe Building) with a double basement occupying the Northwest corner of 1st and Madison built by Jensen & Koch immediately after the fire. The Seattle Brass Foundry occupied a small brick building behind it. Seattle was brought out of the depression with the discovery of gold in the Yukon in 1897. The city soon became a major supply point for prospectors on their way to the gold fields which resulted in a large building boom.</p><br>
<h3>Hotel Cecil and Beebe Building</h3><br>
<p>The 6-story Hotel Cecil and 4-story Beebe Buildings were both built by the Clise Investment Co. for Syracuse, New York resident and capitalist Clifford D. Beebe, a member of the executive committee of the Seattle Lighting Company and a stockholder in several of Clises interests. Construction began in late 1900 and was completed on both buildings by late 1901. The 6-story building cost $100,000 while the 4-story building, finished last, cost $65,000. The first tenants of the buildings ground and second level (as well as its two sub-basements) was the prominent Z.C. Miles & Piper Company, a home furnishing store begun in Seattle in 1870.</p><br>
<p>From construction, the buildings upper floors were interconnected to serve as a hotel, the first of several being the Hotel Waldorf. Soon after opening it was renamed the Hotel Cecil (after the Hotel Cecil in London). In November 1909, the buildings owners hired Umbrecht, now in the firm of Spalding & Umbrecht, to completely remodel the two building&#39;s interiors.</p><br>
<p>After operating sporadically for several years as the McFarland Hotel, it came under new management in 1921 and was reopened as the New Arlington Hotel, named after the Arlington Hotel located two blocks north owned by the same people. At the same time, a hotel named The New Cecil Hotel opened on Third Avenue. As the New Arlington Hotel, it catered to businessmen as well as transients and offered telephones and hot and cold running water in each of its 200 rooms.</p><br>
<h3>Globe Building</h3><br>
<p>The Globe Building, or Globe Block as it was sometimes known, was constructed in 1901 by James Clise for Syracuse investor William Nottingham for Clises newly formed shipbuilding operation, the Globe Navigation Company to which Nottingham held a large interest. Nottingham and Clise filed a permit for a four story building at the Northwest corner of 1st Avenue and Madison Street in March 1901, replacing the single story brick Jensen-Koch Building. The buildings upper floors originally contained 38 offices each. Besides the offices of the Globe Navigation and Clise investment Companies, other early upstairs tenants included the Pacific Packing and Navigation Company, The Seattle News-Letter office, The New York Commercial Co. and the Centennial Mill Co. Architect Max Umbrecht moved his own offices into the building upon completion. He was soon joined in the building by up and coming architect John Graham, who would eventually rise to be one of Seattle&#39;s greatest 20th century architects. In the corner office of the first floor, Clise opened the Washington Trust Company, which would later merge with the Dexter Horton Bank which would become part of Seafirst Bank.</p><br>
<p>The Globe Building was the center of James Clises business empire until 1917 when he built the much larger Securities Building uptown. Upon its completion, he moved all of his companys offices to the new building. Following his departure, the tenants of the building began to reflect the working-class population of the area. Pawn shops, restaurants and a public market occupied the lower floors at various times.</p><br>
<p>Healey Nab or "The Nab" is an area of countryside owned partly by Lancashire County Council containing rolling hills, moorland, woodland, ponds and streams to the east of Chorley, Lancashire, between the M61 and the West Pennine Moors. To the south east is Anglezarke Reservoir and to the north east White Coppice.</p><br>
<p>The name "Healey Nab" is derived from heagh (high) and ley (woodland). "Nab" is believed to derive from the Middle-English word nabb meaning a promontory or headland.</p><br>
<p>The area is popular with walkers and a network of hiking trails criss-crosses the area. The Healey Nab area has two small man-made lakes, "Bottom Lodge" and "Top Lodge", a private fishing lake. The two used to be linked to Lower Healey Bleach Works, a finishing works of the towns cotton industry, the remaining structure of which has been incorporated into the sites conversion into a small industrial estate. The summit is Grey Heights, and near it is a disused quarry known as "Devils Rock". Grey Heights and its cairn at 682 feet form the highest point and from there are views over Chorley and it is possible to see the skyline of Preston, Fiddlers Ferry power station in Merseyside, Jodrell Bank Telescope and the silhouette of Blackpool Tower and the Irish Sea. From Chorley, "The Nab" dominates the landscape and is the first significant height gain in the transition from a heavily populated area to the moorland of the West Pennine Moors.</p><br>
<p>Tulip Grove is an antebellum house built nearby the Hermitage in 1836 for Andrew Jackson Donelson, who was the nephew of Andrew Jackson. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>While Andrew Jackson was still President in 1834, Andrew Jackson Donelson decided to build Tulip Grove in land close-by to the Hermitage. The house was completed in 1836 with the original name of "Poplar Grove." President Martin Van Buren suggested he rename it to Tulip Grove in 1841.</p><br>
<p>In 1858, Donelson sold the property to the parents of painter Mayna Treanor Avent (1868–1959), who grew up at Tulip Grove. Later, it passed through successive owners until 1964 when it was acquired by the Ladies&#39; Hermitage Association.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Tulip Grove is representative of the antebellum Greek Revival style that was popular before the American Civil War. It consists of two main stories, a basement, and attic.</p><br>
<h2>Tulip Grove Gallery</h2><br>
<p>The Luisenstadt Canal, or Luisenstädtischer Kanal, is a 2.3 km long former canal in Berlin, Germany. It is named after the Luisenstadt district and ran through today&#39;s districts of Kreuzberg and Mitte, linking the Landwehr Canal with the Spree River, and serving a central canal basin known as the Engelbecken or Angel&#39;s Pool. The canal is named after Queen Louise, the wife of King Friedrich Wilhelm III.</p><br>
<p>The canal was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné based on earlier plans by Johann Carl Ludwig Schmid and was built between 1848 and 1852. Besides its water transport and land drainage roles, it was also conceived as a design element in the development of the surrounding area, and was designed as a decorative strip, flanked by quays lined with neoclassical buildings.</p><br>
<p>The canal never achieved significant boat traffic, and due to low flow levels its water became stagnant. Between 1926 and 1932, the canal was partially filled in and transformed by the landscape gardener Erwin Barth into a sunken garden, with ground level at about the old water level. The Engelbecken was retained as an ornamental pool with the addition of fountains.</p><br>
<p>During and immediately after the Second World War, parts of the gardens were badly damaged, and sections of the sunken gardens in-filled with rubble. In 1961 the Berlin Wall was constructed along the northern part of the route of the former canal. Since 1991, many of the destroyed gardens have been reconstructed, and restored to the design of 1928.</p><br>
<p>The Rebecca Rankin Round Barn is a historic round barn in the far eastern part of the USA state of Indiana. Located along State Road 18 in far northern Jay County, the barn is one of many built throughout the state during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its distinctive manner of construction has resulted in its designation as a historic site.</p><br>
<h2>Round barns in Indiana</h2><br>
<p>Due to the invention of circular silos with elevators by 1882, round barns began to become practical in the late nineteenth century. Trade magazines soon began to make this technology more widely known, and farmers began to embrace this technology by building their barns around their silos. Moreover, farmers found that circular barns were more efficient, because they had no need to walk from end to end of the building multiple times when feeding their animals. As farmers and professors at land-grant universities in different states began to advocate the construction of round barns, Indiana farmers became aware of this trend; 152 round barns were constructed in the state between 1889 and 1936, of which 77 survived into the 1990s.</p><br>
<h2>Rankin Barn</h2><br>
<p>The Rankin Barn was constructed under the leadership of Benton Steele and Cameron Watt in 1908, One other round barn was constructed in Jay County; known as the Holdcraft Round Barn, it was built in 1913 along the present State Road 1. In 1985, Indiana state historic preservation officials surveyed the entirety of Jay County to record historic buildings in communities and in rural areas; the Rankin Barn was one of nearly 750 places in the county to be deemed historic, but one of only 82 to receive the highest rank, that of "outstanding."</p><br>
<p>In 1993, the Rankin Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the 1985 survey&#39;s definition of "outstanding" included possible eligibility for inclusion on the Register, the Rankin Barn is one of only eight Jay County locations to be accorded this distinction.</p><br>
<p>The Decatur County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is best known for having a growing tree on its roof.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original courthouse was built in the 1820s when a log building was erected. On May 14, 1822, the first board of directors of the court met at the house of Thomas Hendricks, the owner of the double log building. A few years later, a small brick building, measuring two stories high and forty feet square, was built on the public square. Court was held in this structure until 1855. Building of the present structure commenced in 1850; it was completed in 1861, at a cost of $100,000. At the time, it was called the finest courthouse in the state.</p><br>
<p>In the early 1870s, it was noticed that a tree was growing on the roof. Soon four more trees were counted on the roof of the one hundred and ten foot steeple. This rapid growth of trees raised fears among county officials that permanent damage would be caused to the tower. In 1888, a steeplejack was hired to help workers scale the building and remove a few of the shrubs. Of the two trees left, one eventually reached a height of fifteen feet, with a base diameter of five inches. At some point, another tree began to grow on the southeast corner of the tower and reached a large height within a few years. As this tree was growing, another tree sprung up on the southwest corner.</p><br>
<p>The exact species of these trees has been a matter of debate. The Smithsonian Institution stated that the trees were large-tooth aspens, but a more recent study by Purdue University foresters has showed that the current tree is a mulberry.</p><br>
<p>In 1994, a renovation and expansion of the courthouse took place on the north end of the building. The floorspace of the building was more than doubled. At that time, the stucco that covered the building was removed and the original brick facing was revealed.</p><br>
<p>Long Mile Cave, sometimes known locally as Pickny Mama Cave or Hells Gate Cave, is a palaeontological and palaeoanthropological site in the Cockpit Country of north-western Jamaica.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site is a small, largely collapsed, limestone chamber cave that is now a rock shelter with a depth of 3 m and a length of 6 m. It lies in the Trelawny Parish close to the Coxheath-Windsor Road on privately owned farmland and is an important Quaternary palaeontological site as well as containing a Taino midden. Extinct fossil animals discovered at the site include the Jamaican monkey (Xenothrix mcgregori) and the Jamaican flightless ibis (Xenicibis xympithecus), which were described from material excavated by Harold Anthony in 1919-1920.</p><br>
<p>The Ransom B. Shelden House is a private house located at 1304 College Avenue in Houghton, Michigan. It is currently used as the Tau Kappa Epsilon  Fraternity House. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<h2>Ransom B. Shelden Jr.</h2><br>
<p>In 1852, Ransom B. Shelden Sr. arrived in Houghton, opening the first store in the area and platting the section that would become the village of Houghton in 1861. Shelden began several copper mines in the area and, in 1865, established the First National Bank of Houghton.</p><br>
<p>Ransom B. Shelden Jr. was born on June 10, 1852, the same year his father arrived in Houghton. Ransom Jr. attended both the Genessee and Mount Pleasant Military Academies in New York, then went to work for his father. He also became a clerk for the Deputy United States Collector. Shelden married Cordelia A. Paull; the couple had two sons.</p><br>
<h2>House history</h2><br>
<p>In 1893, Ransom B. Shelden Jr. purchased several lots on College Avenue from his fathers copper company. By 1896, he had built this Queen Anne house for his family. However, the Sheldens lived in the house only for a short time; in 1898 Ransom Jr. sold the house to John H. Rice and moved to California. Rice was the president of the First National Bank, a founder of Houghton Chamber of Commerce in 1919, and a director of other Upper Peninsula businesses such as the Copper Range Railroad and Ontonogans Belt Mines. John Rice&#39;s family owned the house until 1941. The house was resold several times, and in 1969 the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity purchased the home; it has since been used as a fraternity house by students at the nearby Michigan Technological University.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Ransom B. Shelden Jr. House is a three-and-one-half-story structure Queen Anne house, with an asymetrcal facade. The house retains its original wood siding, with fish scale shingles on the upper stories, and rough-cut sandstone forming the front porch. The house features an octagonal tower and multiple projecting gables; the front gable has gingerbreaded vergeboards, and the side opening gables have diagonal stick trim.</p><br>
<p>At a height of the Torhelm is one of the highest mountains in the Kitzbühel Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It lies at the head of several side valleys of the Ziller and Brixental valleys. Northwest of the summit is the Hemergrund the head of the Märzengrund, a side valley of the Ziller. The Wilde Krimml stream to the southwest drains via the Krummbach and the Gerlos valley into the Ziller valley, whilst the Lange Grund to the northeast runs via the Kelchsau into the Brixental. One of the neighbouring peaks of the Torhelm is the Kreuzjoch.</p><br>
<p>Many ski tourists visit the Torhelm, especially in the spring, although it is one of the mountains within the Kitzbühel Alps to which the longest ski tours go. Normally it is possible to ski downhill well into the valley on firn until the end of May. In summer the Torhelm is accessible on hiking trails from the Wilder Krimml and the Langer Grund.</p><br>
<p>On the summit of the Torhelm is a large summit cross made of wood that was erected in 1978. On a bronze plaque is the following inscription:"Schlag ein wenn eine Hand sich gibt, denn Vorsicht braucht es nicht. Der Mensch der seine Berge liebt ist immer grad und schlicht" ("Take it when his hand is offered, for you need not be cautious. The man who loves his mountains is always straight and true.")</p><br>
<p>Not far away (on the other side of the Gerlos valley) is another mountain also called the Torhelm, which is a smaller neighbour of the Brandberger Kolm.</p><br>

<p>The Schafsiedel is a high mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps in Austria. It is one of the highest peaks on the main crest of the Kitzbühel Alps. It also the summit most frequently climbed from the New Bamberg Hut, not least because of the 3 mountain lakes that are passed en route: the photogenic lower lake, the green middle lake and the rock-rimmed upper lake.</p><br>
<p>About 500 m south of the summit is the Aleitenspitze, which is easily reached from the Schafsiedel.</p><br>
<h2>Route to the summit</h2><br>
<p>The valley of the Kurzer Grund in the Kelchsau is the start of the most commonly used approach route. Its starting point near an inn, the Gasthof Wegscheid, is accessible by car over a metalled toll road. There are numerous unmetalled car parking areas near the inn.</p><br>
<p>The path climbs steeply up the wooded slopes above a mountain stream, the Kurzer Grund Ache, to the New Bamberg Hut that perches on a hillside just above an Alpine meadow nestling amongst the surrounding peaks. Behind the hut, the path branches off to the Schafsiedel, climbing the steep, grassy slopes in a westerly direction to the picturesque Lower Wildalm Lake (Unterer Wildalmsee, ), which is often frequented by anglers. The trail then climbs up to the Middle Wildalm Lake (Mittlerer Wildalmsee, ), the largest of the 3 lakes by area, passing around it to the north on a low ridge before climbing steeply once more to the Upper Wildalm Lake (Oberer Wildalmsee, ), one of the highest in the Kitzbühel Alps. The path follows the lakeshore for a short distance before striking for the summit on a horseshoe-shaped ridge above the lake. The final section is particularly steep. At the top is a metal summit cross and summit register as well as panoramic views of the Austrian Alps in all directions.</p><br>

<p>The Robert Kirkpatrick Round Barn is a historic building located near Coggon in rural Delaware County, Iowa, United States. It was built in 1919 by Robert Kirkpatrick on his own farm. The building is a true round barn that measures 60 ft in diameter. The barn is constructed of clay tiles and features a two-pitch roof with a large hay dormer on the east side and two smaller dormers on the west and north. It is one of 16 clay tile barns that were based on a design from the Johnson Brothers Clay Works in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The use of hollow clay tile is a distinctive trait in the construction of Iowa&#39;s round barns. For many years it was used as a dairy barn before becoming a horse barn. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Steele Dunning Historic District is a neighborhood and historic district in Bloomington, Indiana, United States. Composed of small, single- or double-family houses, the district includes houses built from the late nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth century.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>Steele Dunning is located on Bloomingtons west side, north of the older Prospect Hill neighborhood. In the earliest years of white settlement of Bloomington, the land presently occupied by the neighborhood was part of a farm once owned by Paris C. Dunning, once Governor of Indiana. Dunnings house, known as the Blair-Dunning House, sits immediately southeast of Steele Dunning; among its owners after Dunning was Henry Steele, who bought the land in 1931. At this time, Bloomington was prospering greatly, and Steele chose to subdivide 6 acre of his land to create a neighborhood. The resulting community is located primarily along the east-west Third and Fourth Streets and the north-south Fairview and Jackson Streets.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The neighborhood that resulted from Steele&#39;s subdivision consists almost entirely of single-story houses, most of which were built in a "Free Classic" style that resembles the Queen Anne style of architecture. Some of the houses in the neighborhood are older than the neighborhood itself, such as three different double-pen houses that were constructed during the nineteenth century. erected largely for speculative purposes, they were constructed in such a way that they resemble single-family houses. The form of architecture employed for these residences is known as the "T-plan" because of their floor plan that is shaped like that letter; they feature porches on both sides that are separated by a large gable with a pediment.</p><br>
<p>Despite the small size of the neighborhood, its houses were built at different times; some were built in the late nineteenth century, including one from 1880, while others are as late as 1950. In addition, there are eight non-contributing buildings (seven houses and a church building); built at various dates as late as 1962, they are located within the boundaries of the historic district, but are not parts of it. The majority of the properties in the district were constructed in the early twentieth century; most houses on Fourth Street were constructed between 1900 and 1910, and the houses on Third Street were erected in the second quarter of the century. As a result of the different construction dates, the architectural styles of the two streets are different: Fourth Street primarily features the Free Classic style, while most Third Street residences are in the Arts and Crafts style. Among the most historically significant of the houses are the duplexes on Fourth Street (among the city&#39;s first duplexes), the house at 608 Fourth Street that was once home to Bloomington mayor John Hetherington, and the "saddlebag" house at 521 Fourth Street, which was built in 1898. Two Sears Modern Homes and one shotgun house are also found in the district.</p><br>
<h2>Historic assessment</h2><br>
<p>Twenty-five buildings within the districts boundaries qualified as contributing properties — they help to make the district historic. Between 1999 and 2001, historic preservation officials working with the city of Bloomington surveyed the entire city and identified over two thousand buildings that were deemed to be historic to one extent or another, including the twenty-five in Steele Dunning. These buildings were divided into three classifications: Outstanding, Notable, and Contributing. Properties rated as "Outstanding" were deemed to be historically significant enough to deserve consideration for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places by themselves; "Notable" properties were worthy of special consideration, although not likely to be worthy of individual National Register status; "Contributing" locations were seen as significant parts of their historic districts, but not of great significance by themselves. One of Steele Dunnings contributing properties (the "saddlebag" house) received an "Outstanding" rating, and nine were deemed "Notable;" only fifteen were called "Contributing." The district includes a disproportionately large number of above-average properties: about 13% of the citys sites were named either "Notable" or "Outstanding," in contrast to 40% of those in Steele Dunning. In late 2000, the entire district was listed on the National Register, qualifying both because of its place in the regions history and because of its historically significant architecture. Like the city-designated district, the federally designated district includes twenty-five buildings; however, it also includes two structures, which were not included in the city&#39;s designation.</p><br>
<h3>Table of contributing buildings</h3><br>
<p>Buiston Loch  , also known as Buston, Biston, and Mid Buiston was situated in the mid-Ayrshire clayland at an altitude of 90 m OD. It is visible as an often flooded surface depression in pastureland situated in a low-lying area close to the A735 road between the farms and dwellings of Lochside, Buistonend and Mid-Buiston in the Parishes of Kilmaurs and Stewarton, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch was natural, sitting in a hollow created by glaciation. The loch waters drained via the Garrier Burn that joins the Bracken and Lochridge Burns before joining the River Irvine. It is well documented through the presence of a crannog first excavated 1880-1 and then documented by Mr. D. McNaught, Dr R. Munro and others.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Blaeus map of 1654, based on Timothy Ponts work of the late 16th century, shows a substantial triangular-shaped loch recorded as Buston L, Around 1830 the loch was described by a Mr Hay as being a mossy bog in the summer and a sheet of water throughout the winter and by 1880 a richly cultivated meadow. The site had been further drained around the year 1875.</p><br>
<p>Buiston was a post-glacial loch, on the lands of the farm known as Mid-Buiston, for many years the property of the Earls of Eglinton, Evidence of the original shoreline persists on the northern side of the loch basin.</p><br>
<p>The early Ordnance Survey maps and written descriptions show the site as fully drained and under cultivation, however drainage is now inadequate (2011) and the area is becoming re-established as a seasonal loch.</p><br>
<h3>Drainage</h3><br>
<p>The loch&#39;s drainage may have begun in the early 18th century when Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, was pursuing a number of agricultural improvements on his extensive estates. Further drainage work may have taken place in the 1740s as part of the improvements undertaken to provide employment for Montgomerie Irish estate workers during the Irish potato famines of the 1740s and the mid 19th centuries. Many drainage schemes also date to the end of World War I when many soldiers returned en masse to civilian life.</p><br>
<h3>The Crannog</h3><br>
<p>The roughly circular crannog, known as the Swan Knowe, by a teacher from Kilmaurs, Duncan McNaught, who was familiar with the Lochlea crannog site. The site was first excavated in 1880 and more thoroughly in April 1881. In 1989-90 the site was re-excavated as part of an investigation into the condition of crannogs in south-west Scotland commissioned by Historic Scotland to establish the extent of loss and decay on crannog sites. Finds included a rare fourth century hanging bowl, a dugout canoe, and two ovens.</p><br>
<p>The crannog had four periods of occupation, dating from AD1 to AD 525, that is from before the Roman conquest of this area, through the period of the Damnonian tribe&#39;s rule, and into the time of the brythonic Kingdom of Strathclyde. Three log boats or canoes seem to have been found, the one in 1989-90 was left on site, another was lost in a fire at the Dick Institute in 1909 and the third may survive in the Hunterian Museum in the form of an unprovenanced specimen from the 1881 dig.</p><br>
<p>Much timber (thirteen cartloads) had been taken away prior to the crannog&#39;s identification and a local farmer is recorded as having remarked There maun hae been dwallers here at ae time. It was constructed from successive layers of turves, stones, intermingled within branches and tree trunks. No gangway was found leading to the crannog, which may have had a single large circular dwelling located on it.</p><br>
<p>The Dr. Ambrose Pratt House is a historic house on Pratt Street in Chester, Connecticut. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with side-gable roof and a large central chimney. It has an imposing Federal style facade, where the central bay is dominated by a large oval spider-glass window above the entrance. The main entry is sheltered by a portico supported by paired Doric columns, with small modillions lining the fully pedimented gable. The entry is flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters, which echo pilasters at the building corners. The doorway is topped by a semi-oval fanlight window, as are the sidelights. The interior has well-preserved high-quality woodwork. The house was built in 1820 for Abram Mitchell, a local man who apparently made a small fortune speculating on Continental currency after the American Revolutionary War. The principal builder was Samuel Silliman, a locally well-known master carver. The house belonged to members of the locally prominent Pratt family for many years.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<p>The Grand Opera House is a historic opera house located at the corner of High Avenue and Market Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States. It was built in 1883, designed by William Waters, a local architect, and underwent a major refurbishing in 2009–2010 at an expense of two million dollars. The roof trusses were reinforced, the ceilings were replaced, and a large chandelier was repaired. Additionally a new "Grand Lounge" was added for improved audience services and to smaller events. Today, the opera house seats 600, hosts nearly 100 public performances a year including community and repertory theater, symphony orchestra, corporate meetings and weddings; it is operated by the non-profit Oshkosh Opera House foundation. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.</p><br>
<p>The Elk Rapids Township Hall is a government building located on River Street in Elk Rapids, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The site of the Township Hall is near the location that Abram Wadsworth, the first white settler in the area, lived. By the 1880s, Elk Rapids was a prosperous community that needed a permanent meeting place. The Township Hall was constructed in 1883 from a design by local architect Charles Peale. From the beginning, it was designed to serve both governmental and social functions, housing the town government and containing performance space. The hall hosted plays and vaudeville performances, and in the 1940s it was used as a school gymnasium and auditorium.</p><br>
<p>In the 1950s, demolition of the Township Hall was discussed, but voted down. In 1967, demolition was again discussed, but by 1972, the decision had been made to restore it. In 1974, the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society formed and began a restoration program.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Elk Rapids Township Hall is a rectangular, single-story structure, constructed of buff-colored brick with a mansard roof. It measures approximately 38 ft by 100 ft, topped by a mansard roof. The entrance is reached through a modern rectangular vestibule addition. The side walls have round-arch windows with stepped buttress piers. Inside, the main hall seats approximately 180 guests, with the stage retaining its early twentieth-century valley scene.</p><br>
<p>Now, after extensive renovation, HERTH Hall is a remarkable vintage venue available to rent for wedding events, reunions, concerts, parties and more.</p><br>
<p>Mill Creek is a tributary of the Susquehanna River in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is 8.7 mi long. Its watershed is approximately 36 square miles in area. The creek flows through Plains Township, Bear Creek Township, and Wilkes-Barre.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>Mill Creek begins at the southeastern edge of Plains Township, at the Mill Creek Reservoir. It heads southwest into Bear Creek Township, where it crosses under Interstate 476 and turns northwest, returning to Plains Township. After some distance, it turns west, passing by the Mill Creek Intake Dam and receiving the tributary Deep Creek. Shortly afterwards, it crosses under Interstate 81 and Pennsylvania Route 315 and turns southwest again, roughly skirting the border between Plains Township and the city of Wilkes-Barre. The creek soon turns south, following the city border and it receives the tributary Laurel Run before crossing Pennsylvania Route 309 and turning west. A short distance downstream of Pennsylvania Route 309, it reaches its mouth at the Susquehanna River.</p><br>
<h3>Tributaries</h3><br>
<p>Tributaries of Mill Creek include Gardner Creek, Laurel Run and Coal Brook. There are also a number of minor tributaries, including some unnamed ones.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology and climate</h2><br>
<p>Mill Creek is affected by acid mine drainage, which comes from the South Wilkes-Barre Boreholes in the Solomon Creek watershed. Another cause of the pollution is the creek&#39;s waters entering deep mines. In the 1970s, there was one discharge of raw sewage or treated waste on the main stem.</p><br>
<p>The water quality of Mill Creek decreases downstream of its confluence with Gardener Creek, but increases downstream of its confluence with Laurel Run, due to a Concentration#Qualitative descriptiondilution effect.</p><br>
<p>Near its mouth, the pH of Mill Creek was measured to be 6.9 in the mid-1970s. The concentration of acidity was 5 parts per million and the concentration of alkalinity was 11 parts per million. The concentration of iron was 1.47 milligrams per liter and the sulfate concentration was 35 milligrams per liter.</p><br>
<p>At another location on Mill Creek above the coal mining parts of the watershed (denoted as M-19 on an Operation Scarlift report), the pH ranged from 5.4 to 6.5, the concentration of acidity ranged from 0 to 8 parts per million, and the concentration of alkalinity ranged from 8 to 26 parts per million. The iron concentration ranged from 0 to 0.2 parts per million and the sulfate concentration ranged from 8 to 55 parts per million. The water temperature ranged from 2 &deg;C to 23 &deg;C.</p><br>
<p>In Wilkes-Barre, the annual precipitation was measured to be 44.7 in from 1975 to 1976.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and geology</h2><br>
<p>The Mill Creek watershed is in southeastern part of the Wyoming Valley and 32 percent of the watershed is in the Wyoming Coal Basin. The middle reaches of Mill Creek experience erosion near Bald Mountain Road. The lowest elevation in the watershed is 530 ft above sea level at the confluence of the creek with the Susquehanna River. The highest elevation is 2,160 ft above sea level on the tops of ridges on the southeastern edge of the watershed. The Southeast Mine Pool Complex lies under the watershed of the creek, as well as nearby creeks such as Solomon Creek, Nanticoke Creek, and Warrior Creek.</p><br>
<p>Downstream of the Coalbrook Dam, the tributary Laurel Run is over bedrock that is fractured.</p><br>
<p>The Mill Creek watershed is in the Appalachian Mountain section of the ridge and valley physiographic region.</p><br>
<p>The Red Ash coal seam is found in the Mill Creek watershed. In the watershed, it can be found as low as 800 ft below sea level. However, on the tributary Gardener Creek, the coal appears at the surface.</p><br>
<p>The Spechty Kopf formation occupies much of the southern part of the Mill Creek watershed (in Bear Creek and Jenkins Townships, mostly), along with some areas of the Pocono Formation or the Duncannon member of the Catskill Formation. North of the Spechty Kopf formation lies the Pocono Formation. It is found in Laurel Run, Northern Bear Creek Township, southern Plains Township, southern Jenkins Township, and central Pittston Township. The Mauch Chunk Formation is north of the Pocono Formation. It is found in southern Wilkes-Barre Township and Plains Township, central Jenkins Township, and northern Bear Creek Township and Pittston Township. The Pottsville Group is found in central Wilkes-Barre Township and Plains Township, in central and northern Jenkins Township, and in Laflin. The Llwellyn Formation is found in the northwestern-most reaches of the watershed, including northern Wilkes-Barre Township, Wilkes-Barre, and northern Plains Township.</p><br>
<p>The Oquaga-Wellsboro-Lackawanna soil association is found in the upper reaches of Mill Creek as well as in the southwestern part of the watershed. The Oquaga-Lordstown-Arnot soil association is found a large portion of the central reaches of the watershed and the Chenango-Pope-Wyoming is found in a small part of the central reaches of the watershed. The Strip mine-Mine dump soil association is found in the northern part of the watershed, near the Susquehanna River, and also in parts of the central reaches of the watershed.</p><br>
<p>There is a levee on Mill Creek in the Parsons region of Wilkes-Barre.</p><br>
<h2>Watershed</h2><br>
<p>The watershed of Mill Creek has an area of 35.87 square miles. Portions of eight municipalities are in the watershed. These include Bear Creek Township, Plains Township, Pittston Township, Jenkins Township, Wilkes-Barre Township, Wilkes-Barre, Laflin, and Laurel Run.</p><br>
<p>Most of the upper reaches of the Mill Creek watershed are forested or otherwise rural, while most of the lower reaches are urban areas.</p><br>
<p>Forest occupies 26.24 square miles (73.17%) of the Mill Creek watershed, making it the largest land use. Residential properties of 0.125 acres or less makes up 1.6 square miles (4.47%) of the watershed and commercial land occupies 1.15 square miles (3.2%). 1.06 square miles (2.96%) of the watershed is occupied by a combination of forested and mining lands and 0.86 (2.4%) is occupied by a combination of industrial and commercial land. 0.8 square miles (2.24%) of the watershed are meadows, 0.68 square miles (1.9%) are residential properties between 0.25 and 0.33 acres, and 0.63 square miles (1.74%) are residential properties between 0.5 and 1.0 acres. 0.53 square miles (1.47%) is occupied by residential properties of 2.0 to 4.0 acres, 0.52 square miles (1.46%) is open space, and 0.5 square miles (1.39%) is a combination of forest and meadow.</p><br>
<p>0.46 square miles (1.29%) of the Mill Creek watershed are used for mining, 0.43 (1.2%) are paved, and 0.26 (0.71%) are water. 0.11 square miles (0.32%) are industrial and 0.03 square miles (0.08%) are institutional.</p><br>
<p>The main arterial roads in the Mill Creek watershed are Pennsylvania Route 315, Pennsylvania Route 115, and Interstate 476.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>A small sawmill was built by the Pennamite settlers near the mouth of Mill Creek in spring 1771. In early 1772, Nathan Chapman gained 40 acres of land on a mill site on Mill Creek from the proprietors of Wilkes-Barre Township. This mill operated until October 24, 1784. New mills were built on the creek in 1781 or 1782 and remained in operation until 1787.</p><br>
<p>A number of European settlers arrived at a blockhouse in the summer of 1771 and remained there until at least 1772.</p><br>
<p>Crane Prairie Reservoir is a man-made lake located about 42 mi southwest of Bend in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. The reservoir is named for the cranes that thrive in its habitat and for the upper Deschutes River prairie that once covered the area before the dam on the Deschutes was constructed in 1922. Eighteen years later, in 1940, the dam was rebuilt by the Bureau of Reclamation. The reservoir now serves as one of Oregon&#39;s largest rainbow trout fisheries. The heaviest fish ever caught in the lake was a 19 lb trout.</p><br>
<p>The Deschutes River, which originates at Little Lava Lake, flows south for 8.4 mi to Crane Prairie Reservoir. The river leaves the reservoir via the dam and continues south to Wickiup Reservoir.</p><br>
<p>Doris is a sailing yacht, which has also been known as Astarte, Huntress and Vayu, in Deep River, Connecticut that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. She was designed by Nathanael Herreshoff, who designed five Americas Cup defender yachts and who also was the main architect of the Americas Cup rule change called the Universal Rule. That rule allowed for displacement as well as length and sail area to be included in a formula defining yacht eligibility, and enabled more "sea-kindly" and roomier yachts to be competitive. Previously, America Cup racers were often "either sleek and fast, but had unseaworthy characteristics, or scow-like vessels which were cumbersome but safe and able passage-makers." Doris is believed to be the largest Herreshoff-designed sloop that was built and has survived. She is said to be the first boat built under the Universal Rule.</p><br>
<p>Built in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1905, by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., Doris is the largest all-wood vessel ever built by the firm. The ship was commissioned by S. Reed Anthony, a founding partner of investment banking firm Tucker, Anthony & Co., who paid $18,000. She soon proved her worth, as Doris "... proved to be a sensation in the yachting world when she defeated Gloriana, an earlier Herreshoff design built in 1891 and reported to be the fastest sailing vessel of her day, in a series of match races off Marblehead, Massachusetts." The ship is also unusual for two construction details. Herreshoff employed metal hanging knees instead of the more traditional sheer clamp, and Doris is the only boat to possess what Herreshoff called "belt" or "web frames", whereby oak frames were bent "over the ceiling".</p><br>
<p>Although originally rigged as a gaff-sloop / cutter, the rigging was changed prior to the 1932 Bermuda Race. This proved to be advantageous, as the yacht led the race "for a good part of the race before light winds gave favor to the smaller vessels." In 1934, under the ownership of Lawrence Lowell Reeve, she was converted to a Marconi-ketch. and</p><br>
<p>Over the years Doris has gone under a number of names. Under Lawrence Reeve she was referred to as Astarte from 1934. She was renamed Huntress in 1937 under new owners, and became Vayu when purchased by Richard Hart in 1940. James Mercanti purchased Vayu from Frederic B. Smith of Winthrop, Massachusetts. The ship remained as Vayu under the next owner, Jim Mercanti, who had the boat between 1957 and 1975, before coming into the possession David Revenaugh. Under Brian Amble, who owned the boat from 2001 until at least 2007, she was known once more by her original name, Doris.</p><br>
<p>At its NRHP listing in 1984, the yacht was located in the Connecticut River off River Rd., Deep River, Connecticut, but it was expected to be moved for an upcoming restoration. Latest information is that the ship is owned by Crocker&#39;s Boatyard in New London, Connecticut. According to the Herreshoff Registry, the ship "is currently in poor condition and is in imminent danger of being cut up."</p><br>
<p>Original construction drawings for much of the ship are preserved in the collection at the Hart Nautical Museum, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.</p><br>
<p>Fredenburg House is a historic home located at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York, located about one and one-half miles south of the village and west of Route 9.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The area was originally owned by Nicholas Emigh; it was called "Bocke Bush" or Beech Woods. Emigh eventually settled in the town of Beekman, where larger farms were available. The house later came into the possession of the Fredenburg family, before being purchased by the Livingstons.</p><br>
<h2>House</h2><br>
<p>It was built about 1716 and is a -story, rectangular, gable-roofed farmhouse built into a slight hillside. It is an example of 18th-century regional vernacular German architecture. The garret level contained a domed section of the chimney that served as a meat smoking chamber.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.</p><br>
<p>The Edward T. Archibald House is a historic farmhouse in Dundas, Minnesota, United States. The private home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places  on June 17, 1976. Built in the 1860s, the farmhouse is significant for its association with the prominent miller Edward T. Archibald, whose nearby Archibald Mill was an important mill in the history of Minnesota&#39;s flour milling industry.</p><br>
<h2>Structure</h2><br>
<p>The Edward T. Archibald House is located on the southwest corner of 2nd Street and Hamilton Street in Dundas. The structure is a two-story wood frame structure built in a simple clapboard-sided Greek Revival architecture with a gable roof. It originally had a service wing, but only the main portion of the house remains. The property also once included a wood frame stable carriage barn, but it was later demolished and replaced by neighboring homes.</p><br>
<h2>History and significance</h2><br>
<p>The house was originally built by Lorenzo Hamblin in the 1860s. Edward T. Archibald purchased the property and lived there from 1867 until 1885. Archibald&#39;s work in milling garnered him attention in trade publications of his time as "The man or firm who takes the leading place among flour makers of this country or of the world."</p><br>
<p>Though there were settlers before them, brothers John Sidney and Edward T., along with their cousin George Archibald were responsible for founding Dundas in 1867; they named it after their hometown of Dundas, Ontario, Canada. They built mills on both sides of the Cannon River.</p><br>
<p>Due to the great care that was taken in its manufacture, flour from the Archibald Mill was recognized as the best in the United States. "Dundas straight", as it became known, was sold for $1.00 or more per barrel in New York City and Boston markets than the flours produced in Minneapolis. As a result, Minneapolis millers would come down to Dundas to study the Archibald Mill.</p><br>
<p>A progressive miller, John Sidney imported three barrels of Red Fife wheat from Canada; the Archibalds developed the seed into the No. 1 hard spring wheat that revolutionized farming in Minnesota. Before 1860, the wheat grown in the United States was soft winter wheat, but spring wheat was better suited to the soil. What initially prevented spring wheat from wide adoption was its characteristic flinty quality and high middlings content. Under the low grinding process used before 1870, the wheats hardness caused the mash to heat and its thin brittle bran filled the flour with specks that discolored the flour. To fix this issue, millstones in their mills were run at a lower speed and were set higher so as to simply crack the kernel at the first grinding. It was then put through several grindings. The purpose was to make middlings the most valuable part of the product, as gluten was found in the middlings and provided nutrition and gave bread its rising quality. The Archibalds mills would later be among the first to adopt the middlings purifier, developed in Minneapolis, which allowed for large scale production of the higher gluten flour.</p><br>
<p>Recognizing the need to rise to the competition of Minneapolis mills, Edward T. Archibald made further improvements. In 1879, he remodeled the mills to use rollers, also known as the "Hungarian milling process", which increased productivity while maintaining quality. The Archibald Mill was among the first to use the roller system in its entirety. At this time the mills were at their peak in notability and importance in the flour milling world.</p><br>
<p>Edward T. Archibald moved to nearby Northfield in 1885. The mill complex burned down on New Year&#39;s Eve in 1892 and was immediately rebuilt. It burned down again in 1914, was rebuilt and sold as the industry began to decline. The patents involved were sold to what is now General Mills.</p><br>
<p>The Heriot-Moise House, also known as Ingleside, is an historic plantation house located on Brewington Road at Oswego Highway U.S Highway 401 north of Sumter in Sumter County, South Carolina. It is "significant for its illustration of evolving architectural forms and influences from ca. 1790 into the twentieth century, as altered from an essentially vernacular hall-and-parlor house to a residence with Early Classical revival and Greek revival influences. Extant features from the original house and the ca. 1800, ca. 1830, ca. 1850, and later alterations show how succeeding owners adapted the house to their changing needs and circumstances. It is also significant as a basically intact nineteenth and early twentieth century farm complex."</p><br>
<p>The earliest part of the main house was built around 1790 by a man named Pleasant Tisdale, who had taken title to the surrounding 340 acre in 1787. Around 1850, John Ouldfield Heriot substantially expanded the house to its present appearance. In 1920, the property was acquired by Francis Marion Moise (1893–1968) who adapted it to the needs of his family.</p><br>
<p>In 1986 Air Force Lt. Col. Eric McConnell and his wife Jeannie McConnell acquired the property from the Moise family, but waited for two years before they started renovations to the house so they could make it their home. In July 1989 they were able to move in with their two children, but within two months Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage, which necessitated repairs. Later in December 1991 approximately $37,000 worth of damage was done to the interior furnishings by vandals.</p><br>
<p>On December 21, 1989, the Heriot-Moise House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The designation includes the surrounding property and several outbuildings including a log slave house which dates to the 1790s and a small house which dates to the early 19th century.</p><br>
<p>Oak Lodge is a historic recreational complex in Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth, Connecticut. that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The main building is a large Rustic-style structure built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The lodge was built on the west side of Schreeder Pond, an artificial pond also built by the CCC. It was part of the development of recreational activities within Cockaponset State Forest. The CCC benefited from the construction excellence of its masons, wrought-iron smiths, and woodworkers, and some of their best work is shown in Oak Lodge. The complex also includes two wood-frame bath houses. and The property was covered in a 1985 Connecticut statewide study of 15 depression-era CCC, FERA, CWA, and WPA structures.</p><br>
<p>The Amasa Day House is a Federal homestead in Moodus, Connecticut that now operates as a historic house museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Amasa Day House is a rural Federal house which showcases how the Industrial Revolution changed the daily life of American families. Located on the Moodus Green, it was constructed in 1816 for farmer Colonel Julius Chapman, his wife Frances, and their four daughters. After his death, Amasa Day purchased the property, but later sold off parcels of land as he focused more on his roles as an insurance agent and banker. The house was subsequently inherited by Day&#39;s daughter and son-in-law Katherine and Eugene Chaffee, who worked for the New York Net and Twine Company, one of several twine factories in Moodus. Their son was Dr. Amasa Day Chaffee, a well-known art photographer.</p><br>

<p>The house was donated to Connecticut Landmarks in 1967, who now operate the house as a historic house museum that reflects the lives and lifestyles of the families who lived there in the 1800s.</p><br>

<p>The Thomas Skelton House is an historic house at 124 United States Route 1 in Falmouth, Maine. Built about 1798 in Portland, it is a well-preserved example of Federal style architecture. It was moved to its present site in 1971 to avoid demolition.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1973.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Thomas Skelton House stands at the northern corner of Old US 1 and Gilsland Farm Road in southeastern Falmouth. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a side gable roof, central chimney, clapboard siding, and a concrete foundation faced in brick. The house is oriented facing southeast, on a lot that also includes a garage and former carriage barn. Its main entrance is in the center, flanked by pilasters and topped by a simple entablature. The interior retains original plaster and woodwork, and follows a typical center-chimney plan. The entry vestibule has a narrow winding stair leading to the second floor, with parlor to the left and kitchen to the right, with a long and narrow room behind the chimney. A modern shed-roof ell has been added to the rear, in which modern kitchen facilities are located.</p><br>
<p>The house was built about 1798 by Thomas Skelton, a Portland housewright, and stood on Pleasant Street in Portland. Originally 1-1/2 stories in height, the second story was added about 1810, around the time its owner, Benjamin Deake, married. Threatened with demolition, the building was carefully documented in 1971 by the Greater Portland Landmarks Commission, and then moved to this site and restored. It is one of Portland&#39;s oldest surviving buildings.</p><br>
<p>The Elisha Purington House also known as Pride Farm, is an historic house at 71 Mast Road in Falmouth, Maine. Built in 1761, it is a rare surviving example of Georgian architecture in Maine&#39;s rural interior. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 14, 1985.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Purington House stands in the northwestern interior reaches of Falmouth, on the west side of Mast Road, a short way south of Pride Farm Road. The main house is a 2-1/2 story timber frame structure, with a gabled roof, central chimney, clapboard siding, and stone foundation. It has a number of additions, including a 20th-century garage and an ell joining it to a 19th-century barn. Its front facade is symmetrically arranged, with a center entrance topped by three-light transom window, and framed by a modest surround with entablature. Windows are either six-over-six or nine-over-six sash, and are framed by narrow molding, similar to that found at the building corners and in the interior. Also located on the property is an L-shaped 19th century barn.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1761 by Elisha Purington, a Quaker who had a reputation throughout New England as a clockmaker. He is also known to have served the local community as a blacksmith and gunmaker. The roof his recently-built house was torn off during a hurricane in 1767. The assemblage of surviving 18th and 19th-century buildings is among the finest in a rural inland setting in the state.</p><br>
<p>Halls Tavern, also once known as the Falmouth Tavern, and now the Quaker Tavern B&B and Inn, is an historic tavern at 377 Gray Road in Falmouth, Maine. Built about 1800 as a private home, it served for many years of the 19th century as a traveler accommodation, and is one of Falmouths few surviving buildings of the period. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Hall&#39;s Tavern is located in rural northern Falmouth, on the east side of Gray Road (Maine State Route 100), between Kimball Way and Hurricane Road. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a side gable roof, twin interior chimneys, clapboard siding, and a granite foundation. Telescoping additions extend to the north, joining the house to a clapboarded barn. The main block is five bays wide, with a center entrance framed by Doric pilasters and topped by a four-light transom window and entablature. The interior of the house retains impressive Federal period woodwork and finishes. The tavern taproom, to the right of the entrance, retains original plaster walls with stencilwork stylistically similar to that of the early 18th-century itinerant artist Moses Eaton.</p><br>
<p>The tavern was built about 1800 by Nicholas Hall, a farmer originally from Dover, New Hampshire. The house was in the Hall extended family for most of the 19th century, and was probably converted into a tavern by Nicholas Hall&#39;s son Ozni, who acquired the property in 1823. The house was moved c. 1826-27, when the present Gray Road alignment was made, which may also be when it was made into a tavern. It is now home to a bed and breakfast accommodation.</p><br>
<p>The Payson House at Thornhurst is an historic house at 48 Thornhurst Road in Falmouth, Maine. A Modernist structure, it was built in 1952 to a design by Serge Chermayeff, and is his only known commission in the state. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Payson House is located on Falmouth&#39;s Casco Bay coast, set on a spit of land called Bartlett Point that juts north into the bay on the south side of the mouth of Mill Creek. The house is a single story structure with a roughly T-shaped layout. Most of the exterior consists of a series of units, each with a floor-to-ceiling plate glass window and door, surmounted by a white panel and set above a wooden platform. These units are separated by gray-painted vertical board siding. The sizes of these units roughly correspond to the size of the rooms they enclose, with the largest forming the outside of the living room. The interior of the house is unpretentiously finished, with flat white and gray finishes and hardwood flooring.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1952 to a design by Serge Chermayeff, and enlarged in 1972 to a design by Chermayeffs son Peter that was part of the original design vision. The house is the only known Chermayeff commission in Maine, and it is one of a small number of Modern movement buildings in the state. Integral to Chermayeffs design are the landscaping and views of the bay. The property on which it stands had long been in the Payson family, who had torn down a large and dilapidated Victorian (called "Thornhurst") in 1952, in order to make way for a more modern year-round residence. The Paysons, whose son attended school with Chermayeff&#39;s son Ivan, gave Chermayeff freedom to create a design that met their requirements.</p><br>
<p>The Henry Boody House also known as the Boody-Johnson House, is an historic house at 256 Maine Street in Brunswick, Maine, United States. Built in 1849, it is an important early example of Gothic Revival Architecture, whose design was published by Andrew Jackson Downing in 1850 and received wide notice. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 1975.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Boody House is located south of downtown Brunswick and opposite the main Bowdoin College Campus at the northwest corner of Maine and Boody Streets. The house&#39;s main block has a roughly H-shaped configuration, with a pair of projecting gabled sections joined by a central section with a roof ridge perpendicular to the others. It is 2-1/2 stories in height, with board-and-batten siding and a granite foundation. The street-facing gables have identical Gothic trim in the gables, and single-story projecting window bays. A gable-roofed porch with Stick style decoration projects slightly from the narrow center section, and shed-roof porches extend across the sides of the main block. An ell extends to the rear, joining the house to a carriage barn.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1849 for Henry Hill Boody, Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Bowdoin College in Brunswick from 1845-1854. It cost $6,000 to build the house and purchase the land. Boody sold the property in 1870. It then passed through several hands before being purchased by Bowdoin Professor Henry Johnson in 1877. When Johnson died, the property passed to his oldest daughter, Helen Johnson Chase, who was married to Bowdoin Professor Stanley P. Chase. The property is now owned by Bowdoin College.</p><br>
<p>The house was designed in 1848 by Gervase Wheeler, an English architect whose work reflected a growing architectural aesthetic to externalize aspects of a buildings construction, exemplified here by the use of vertical board-and-batten siding. Wheelers design was published in Andrew Jackson Downing&#39;s 1850 work The Architecture of Country Houses, an influential work in popularizing the Carpenter Gothic style. The house is also regarded as an important precursor of the Stick style, which followed the Gothic Revival.</p><br>
<p>Steenburg Tavern is a historic Revolutionary War-era tavern located at Rhinecliff, Dutchess County, New York.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Located on the west side of Route 9, it was originally built about 1749 and expanded in the late 18th century. A 1749 map shows Joachim Radcliff living on the property; he was likely the original builder. A 1798 map indicates that it was by then a tavern owned by Benjamin van Steenburg.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>It is a four bay wide, two bay deep stone building built into a hillside. It features a sweeping gable roof and broad low verandah. The overhang of the front roof, sheltering a porch is a typical Dutch feature. Also on the property is a contributing carriage barn and privy. Originally built as a farmhouse,</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.</p><br>
<p>Grasmere is a national historic district and estate located at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Grasmere estate was built by the widowed Janet Livingston Montgomery, who had inherited the land from her grandfather. In 1802 she built Montgomery Place in Annandale-on-Hudson. After moving there in 1805, rented the estate before selling the property to Peter Livingston in 1822. The manor house was destroyed by fire in 1823 and the original house was built on the ruins of General Richard Montgomerys 1773 house. Upon Peter Livingstons death in 1847, the estate passed to his nephew Louis H. Livingston. In 1893 it was purchased by Mrs. F.A. Crosby. Maunsell S. Crosby ran a successful crop and dairy farm. In 1954 the property was purchased by Louise Clews who subsequently married Robert Livingston Timpson. Mrs. Clews Timpson held a couple of charity masked balls at Grasmere.</p><br>
<h2>Estate</h2><br>
<p>It consists of 12 contributing buildings and four contributing structures. The main house was originally built about 1824 and expanded about 1861 and in 1907-1908. In 1861 Louis H. Livingston and his brother, James, added rounded Victorian tops to the first floor windows. Maunsell Crosby added a wing in 1907. The building is a three story brick dwelling with restrainted classically inspired design. It sits on a stone foundation and has a hipped roof. In addition to the manor house the contributing buildings / structures include: a barn, three garages, five sheds, the formal gardens, stone walls / gateposts, two corn cribs, two tenant houses (c. 1916), and a stone stable complex (c. 1901). The driveway is lined with mature locust trees planted by Janet Montgomery.</p><br>
<p>By the mid-19th, it included as dependencies the separately listed Benner House, Fredenburg House, and Steenburg Tavern. Much of the Grasmere land has been restored to active farm use in recent years. The 1901 stone barn was rebuilt after a fire and has been adapted for use as a wedding venue.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.</p><br>
<p>Halket Loch , also known as Halkhead or Halketh, was situated in the mid-Ayrshire clayland near Lugton. It is visible as a surface depression in pastureland, sometimes partially flooded, situated in a low-lying area close to farms and dwellings of East, North and Middle Halket and Craighead in the Parish of Dunlop, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The loch was natural, sitting in a hollow created by glaciation. The loch waters drained via the Glazert Water that joins the Annick Water.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Gabriel Porterfield and his wife Jean Maxwell had a conjunct liferent of Halketh and its loch on a charter of Robert Montgomerie of Hessilhead, dated 24 May 1634. In 1648 the loch was held by John Porterfield of Hapland, as heir to his father Gabriel. The loch was later inherited by his brother Alexander on 5 October 1653. The lands and Loch of Halket later lay within the Barony of Robertland as recorded by a charter under the Great Seal of 8 July 1676. Blaeus map of 1654, based on Timothy Ponts work of the late 16th century, shows a Halkhead Loch, with a single property, Halkhead, nearby.</p><br>
<p>Halket was a post-glacial loch and lies beneath the prominent hill known as Craighead Law. Thomsons map of 1832 refers to the loch as Hawkhead&#39;. Lochridgehills Farm, with its descriptive and indicative placename, lies near to shoreline at the site of the old Halket Loch.</p><br>
<h3>Drainage</h3><br>
<p>Crops in the area were greatly prone to mildew and this was one of the reasons for the demise of the loch. Further drainage work may have taken place as part of the improvements undertaken to provide employment for Irish estate workers during the Irish potato famines of the mid 19th centuries. Many drainage schemes also date to the end of World War I when many soldiers returned en masse to civilian life.</p><br>
<h3>Craighead Law</h3><br>
<p>Craighead Lea or Law hill, 687 ft high, is said to be a Moot hill, a justice or court hill controlled in feudal times by the local baron. Stones on its summit appear to be deliberately positioned and a grass covered cairn is very noticeable. A farmer from East Halket removed one of these to facilitate his ploughing. One stone on the summit has a vertical hole drilled to the depth of four feet or so, presumably to be used for ‘slot’ for a flagpole for flying a standard, a similar arrangement to that which existed at the Borestone at Greenhills near Beith. Near Aiket Castle is another Court Hill. Smith sees the law as a moot hill and as also a fort.</p><br>
<h2>Micro-history</h2><br>
<p>Upon the murder of the 4th Earl of Eglinton at Stewarton in April 1586 the loch is mentioned in one version of the events - Their horsemen rode by the waters of Corsehill and Lugton and Glazert: they skirted the Halket Loch and the base of the rocky knolls of Dunlop. This indicates that the loch was of some significant size in the 1580s.</p><br>
<p>On the lands of East Halket stood a highland grit standing stone, standing 4 ft 6in high, removed circa 1905.</p><br>
<p>This surname Halket was derived from the lands of Halkhead, Renfrewshire, although a family bearing the name de Ross have long been in record as possessors of the property. The place name may have originally been Hawkwood. Sir Henry Hakette witnessed a charter in 1230, and appears to be the first of the name on record. Halkit, Halkhet, Halkette, Haket, Hacet, Hacat, Hakkett, Holkat, Halkhead, Halkhaide, Halkheid, and Halkheide are all variations of the name Halkhead.</p><br>
<p>In 1896 a new road, the Halket Road, 7 furlongs long, was built between the Duniflat and the Bradlie Roads.</p><br>
<p>The Henry Perviance Peers House is a rectangular, two-story painted brick house in Maysville, Kentucky overlooking the Ohio River. The structure has a moderately pitched standing-seam hipped roof with a flat center section. There are four chimneys extending from the roof line, and the flat portion of the hipped roof has an unusual framed clerestory window that provides ventilation and natural light to the attic room. It is built into the hillside such that the northern face is two-story while the southern face is single-story.</p><br>
<p>Henry Peers (1807–1846) was employed during the early 1840s as a general agent for the Maysville Eagle Newspaper, traveling to the larger towns in Kentucky to expand the subscription base and gather news. He began taking notes on the Kentucky history he gathered in the course of his work with the intent to author a Gazetteer for the state but died in March 1846 before publishing it. He left a 250-page manuscript of narrative and statistics that was used by his employer and brother-in-law, Lewis Collins, as the basis for a history of Kentucky.</p><br>
<p>Peers was the son of Major Valentine Peers, born in Ireland and a veteran of the American Revolution. Major Peers moved to Maysville in 1803 and became one of the area&#39;s most successful pioneer industrialists.</p><br>
<p>Swansea Cave is a cave and palaeontological site in the Saint Catherine Parish of south-eastern Jamaica.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site lies on private land in the Worthy Park district at an altitude of 385 m above sea level and is surrounded by forest and sugarcane cultivation. The geology is white limestone. The cave is a dry, fossil stream passage, 1170 m in length, which has collapsed in three places. The main entrance is 10 m high by 12 m wide.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>The cave contains a large, mixed roost of over 10,000 bats between the second and third collapse points, as well as small numbers of the Jamaican fruit bat near the main entrance. Invertebrates found in the cave include the American cockroach, cave crickets, amblypygids, and the rare Onychophoran Speleoperipatus speleus. Fossil animals discovered at the site include the Jamaican flightless ibis (Xenicibis xympithecus).</p><br>
<p>Messerschmidt Pond Wildlife Management Area is a tract of land in Westbrook and Deep River, Connecticut, adjacent to Cockaponset State Forest. The area includes the millpond and former site of the Deep River Manufacturing Company , which preserved a variety of historic manufacturing machinery until its demolition in 1987. The mill and an associated shed and dam were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The mill on the site was originally built in about 1875 by Russell Doane, a local farmer, as a sawmill. It was powered by the water behind an earthen dam built across the Falls River, which forms a millpond of about 73 acres. The extensive logging of the area that Doane anticipated did not materialize, and the mill was foreclosed on in 1884. It passed through a succession of owners before being sold to Charles Messerschmidt, Sr., who owned an adjacent farm, in 1914. Messerschmidt derived most of his income from the farm and ran the mill part-time. In 1929, he and three other men formed a partnership which bought the Deep River Manufacturing Company. and</p><br>
<p>Deep River Manufacturing had begun in the 1860s as J.A. Smith & Co., a firm which made hooks and other bent-wire objects in a shop in Deep River. In 1885, the firm was bought by Henry Snell and Mathewson Potter, who used its equipment to manufacture crochet hooks, knitting needles, and button hooks. The partnership operated until 1927, when it was sold to one of the employees, but went bankrupt within a year; the eclipse of high-button shoes and gloves in fashion had largely destroyed the companys market. Ernest Prann and other local men formed the Deep River Manufacturing Company and bought the firm, but sold the company to another partnership, which included Messerschmidt, Sr., in 1929. Messerschmidts son, Charles, Jr., who had obtained a bookkeeping certificate from Baypath Institute in 1928, was also brought into the partnership.</p><br>
<p>The company did not prosper during the Great Depression. Unable to afford the mortgage on the Deep River location, the equipment was moved in 1933 to Messerschmidts largely idle sawmill. One by one, the partners dropped out until only the Messerschmidts were left. They drew no salary during those years, as all the companys receipts went towards paying the dozen employees. On the edge of collapse, Deep River was saved by the National Silver Co., of New York City, which offered to buy all the nutcrackers and nut picks the company could make. (The company would later produce lobster forks as well.) Charles Messerschmidt, Jr., was placed in charge of converting the company&#39;s equipment to make these products.</p><br>
<p>Charles&#39; mechanical work was highly successful. Though he lacked formal training as a mechanical engineer, a natural mechanical inclination sharpened by boyhood on the farm and in the sawmill allowed him to create unique machinery to cheaply manufacture his products. His achievements including building a knurling machine for utensil stock from a mixture of home-made and purchased parts, and the extensive modification of a power press to stamp nutcracker teeth. In addition to the mechanical changes within, a shed was built across the road from the mill in about 1935 so that the products could be nickel plated. Manufacturing continued at the mill, using the original machinery, until 1974 or 1976. In 1970, two waste lagoons were dug on the property for disposal of the nickel waste, and the dam was patched with concrete during the 1970s.</p><br>
<p>Ownership of the site, including the millpond, passed to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection in 1982 or 1983. Abandoned drums found near the mill in 1982 led to the removal of several drums and tanks of wastes and sludges. The mill, the plating shed, and the dam were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. However, the DEP demolished the mill in 1987 and the plating shed in 1988. Though some soils on the property have been contaminated by PCBs and metals, a preliminary investigation and site assessment in 1995 concluded that there was, at the time, no need to remove additional material from the site.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The area now consists of a 77 acre or 82 acre pond created by impounding the Falls River with an earthen dam. The dam is up to 22 ft high, with a rubble core and a stone spillway now faced with concrete. The dam and the remains of the millrace incorporated into it are the only remaining component from the site&#39;s NRHP listing.</p><br>
<p>A boat launch is located on the opposite side of the pond.</p><br>
<h3>Mill</h3><br>
<p>The mill, demolished in 1987, was a gable-roofed, chestnut timber-framed structure 2½ stories high, built on the edge of the dam. In later years, additions on three of the four sides were incorporated and the mill was covered in asphalt shingles. Although augmented by steel bolts, the building retained treenails in its framing until its demise.</p><br>
<p>The machinery was left inside the building after the mill closed, with the exception of footpresses for riveting. It drew its power from a turbine beneath the building, which powered a direct current generator. The electricity from the generator drew a motor that turned a line shaft, to which the machinery was attached by belting. The machinery present included three power presses, one of them extensively modified by Messerschmidt; a knurling machine, built by Messerschmidt; two multiple-spindle screw machines; and seven swaging machines, as well as machinery and hand tools for metalworking in a toolroom contained in an addition to the building.</p><br>
<p>The David Carpenter House is a former residence currently operating as a restaurant called the Hathaway House. It is located at 424 West Adrian Street  in the village of Blissfield in Blissfield Township, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan State Historic Site on August 13, 1971 and also later listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1979.</p><br>
<p>Built in approximately 1851, it is a rather large Greek Revival house built by New York native and merchant David Carpenter, who was one of Lenawee County&#39;s most prominent residents when he moved to the area in 1838. The house originally contained 18 rooms, which included a card room, several parlors, dining room, library, three kitchens, and five bedrooms. Several walls were removed at later dates to create larger rooms. Minor additions, such as the addition of a second story to the side wings, were added soon after its construction.</p><br>
<p>Carpenter lived in the house from 1851 until his death in 1891. After his death, the house passed to other members of his family, and it was sold to the Hathaway family at the turn of the century. It remained a private residence until 1960 when it was converted into the Hathaway House restaurant by the Weeber family. In 1995, the most recent addition included a back parlor and new back porch. Today, the structure includes three dining rooms and two parlors on the main floor and three dining rooms and a ballroom on the second floor. The structure has retained most of its exterior details since it was first constructed.</p><br>
<p>Loch Mhòr is a loch in the traditional county of Inverness-shire in the Scottish Highlands. It occupies much of the wide floor of Stratherrick which runs roughly parallel to Loch Ness around 3 mi / 5 km to its southeast. A generally shallow body of water 179m above Loch Ness, Loch Mhòr achieves a depth in excess of 20m towards its southern end.</p><br>
<p>Loch Mhòr was originally two separate lochs, Loch Garth in the southwest and Loch Farraline in the northeast. The water level was raised, so it could be used as a reservoir for a hydro-electric scheme and associated aluminium smelter at Foyers (the smelter closed in 1967, but the Loch is still used as a reservoir for a 300 MW pumped-storage hydroelectricity facility). This joined the two lochs into one, though they are still divided by a causeway carrying a minor road. In its middle reaches, a broad and shallow embayment on its southeastern shore contains a scatter of islets.</p><br>
<p>The main rivers into the Loch are the River E, and some of the flow of the River Fechlin, which has been diverted through an aqueduct.</p><br>
<p>The waters of the loch empty as the River Gourag below a dam at its southwestern end. This short river joins the River Foyers which empties into Loch Ness.</p><br>
<p>Eastman Terrace is a historic rowhouse block located at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. It was built in 1872 and consists of ten sections. The block is three stories high on a raised basement. It features a mansard roof with polychrome slate and an elaborate roofline with decorative stone parapets and iron cresting. The block was part of a larger plan to develop the Eastman Park section of the city.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Harvey G. Eastman was an educator, politician, and prominent citizen of the City of Poughkeepsie in the mid-19th century. He established the Eastman Business College in 1859 and was the city&#39;s mayor from 1871 to 1874. Among other innovations Eastman brought to Poughkeepsie like street lighting and a central water system, he had a vision for the area bordering the southern edge of downtown. In 1865, he purchased 27 acres of swamp land right next to his mansion at Montgomery Street and South Avenue, and envisioned a park with a housing development to complete it. The park was to be of grand design and became known as the “Central Park” of Poughkeepsie. It was complete with fountains, a pond with a central island, a terraced walkway, a concert area, a ball field, a skating park, a small zoo, and an extensive flower garden. The park was bordered with walls of marble and paths of bluestone. The park, open to the public at no charge, was privately funded by Eastman at a total cost of $200,000 ($ in 2016).</p><br>
<p>The second part of Eastman’s vision was an urban townhouse community. In 1872, he planned to build 24 five-story rowhouses bordering the southern edge of the park in one long block along a street still known as Eastman Terrace. The development, which would ultimately fail, became known as “Eastman’s Folly.” The townhouses were offered at $17,000 each ($ in 2016) and were marketed as the finest, most modern townhomes between New York City and Albany. Buyers had choices to their interior finishes like specially designed furniture and stenciled walls, all of the highest quality craftsmanship available. Eastman had 10 of the houses built but struggled to sell them. The answer seemed trivial to the local wealthy population; a narrow, connected house was unnecessary when one could build a large, detached house on nearby Academy Street or Garfield Place. While Eastman had the lots and walkways for the remaining 14 townhouses laid out, his struggle to sell the first 10 influenced his decision to stop construction of them before they were complete.</p><br>
<p>Eastman Park and the rowhouses still exist today although with much less allure. The park no longer has its extravagant features and in the 1970s the YMCA built a mostly athletic facility on the grounds and turned much of the park into athletic fields and a dirt running track, though the facility was closed in early 2009 from financial issues. The building and fields are mostly dilapidated now. The western side of the park is a combination football/baseball field which still hosts select football games between local high schools. Much of the park&#39;s marble walls and bluestone perimeter walks are still intact. The rowhouses were mostly converted to apartments in the early 20th Century with only one remaining a single family home.</p><br>
<p>Haidian Island is an island that forms part of the city of Haikou, Hainan Province, China. It is separated from the main part of Haikou by the Haidian River. The north coast faces the Qiongzhou Strait. The east coast faces Xinbu Island, separated by part of the Nandu River. The west coast faces Haikou Bay.</p><br>
<p>Renmin Avenue is the main street that runs through the middle of the island from the south at the Renmin Bridge to the north shore at the newly built Baishamen Park, which contains an amusement park. Hainan University&#39;s main campus is located on the west side of this avenue.</p><br>
<p>The western part of the island has been expanded as part of a land reclamation project started in the late 2000s.</p><br>
<h2>Notable locations</h2><br>
<p>Hainan University&#39;s main campus is situated between Haidian West 3rd Road and Haidian West 5th Road.</p><br>
<p>Created in 2010, Baishamen Park, an ocean-side recreational leisure facility is located on the north coast. It contains an amusement park, artificial lake, and various sports facilities.</p><br>
<p>Baishamen Lighthouse, the second tallest in China and sixth tallest in the world, is located at the northwest corner of the island.</p><br>
<p>Haikou City People&#39;s Hospital, a large new hospital on Renmin Avenue.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The island is accessible via four bridges:</p><br>
<p>Haikou Century Bridge crosses the mouth of the Haidian River from the main part of Haikou, at the north end of Long Kun North Road (龙昆北路), connecting with the end of Haidian West 5th Road (海甸五西路).</p><br>
<p>Renmin Bridge (人民大桥) crosses a narrow section of the Haidian River linking Changdi Road (长堤路) with Renmin Avenue (人民大道).</p><br>
<p>Heping Bridge (和平大桥) connects Changdi Road and Heping Avenue (和平大桥) across the Haidian River.</p><br>
<p>Xinbu Bridge spans a branch of the Nandu River to link Xinbu Island (新埠岛) with Haidian East 5th Road (海甸五栋路).</p><br>
<p>A new bridge is currently under construction that will connect Haidian Island to Xinbu Island. It is located north of the Xinbu Bridge.</p><br>
<p>The Tarr–Eaton House, also known as Tarr–Eaton–Hackett House, is an historic house at 906 Harpswell Neck Road in Harpswell, Maine. Built before 1783 and enlarged about 1840, it is a well-preserved 18th-century Cape with added Greek Revival features, and one of Harpswell&#39;s few surviving pre-Revolutionary War buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Tarr–Eaton House stands in Harpswell Center, on the west side of Harpswell Neck Road (Maine State Route 123), in a field just north of the 1750 Harpswell Meetinghouse, a National Historic Landmark. It is a single-story wood frame structure, with a side gable roof, a reproduction central chimney, five-bay facade, clapboarded exterior, and a foundation of concrete and rubblestone. A single-story shed-roof ell extends northward from its rear northeast corner. The main facade faces south, consisting of four windows with simple surrounds, two on either side of the main entrance, which is topped by a four-light transom window. A porch extends across the eastern facade, supported by simple square posts. The interior has a typical center-chimney plan, with the entry vestibule housing a narrow winding staircase, with parlor spaces to either side, and the kitchen behind. Fireplaces feature Federal period mantels, and the interior retains other period finishes.</p><br>
<p>The house was probably built sometime before 1783, the year in which William and Elizabeth Tarr&#39;s first child was born. It was the farmstead for a farm of over 100 acre. Tarr was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, and is also recorded as operating a tavern in the town and serving as its constable. Tarr sold his property to Joseph Eaton in 1811, and it remained in the Eaton family until 1895. The house and two acres were given to the Harpswell Historical Society in 1982, which resold it into private ownership with protective covenants.</p><br>
<p>The Elijah Kellogg House is an historic house on Barton Lane in Harpswell, Maine. It is a well-preserved Greek Revival house, built in 1849 by Elijah Kellogg, a Congregationalist minister at the nearby church, and a lecturer and author of popular boy&#39;s adventure books. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1975.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The house is located near Harpswell Center, on the north side of Barton Lane, a private road extending west from Harpswell Neck Road (Maine State Route 123), the principal north-south route on the Harpswell peninsula. It is an L-shaped 2-1/2 story wood-framed structure, with a rectangular main block and a long two-story ell extending to the east. The south facade is two bays wide, with widely-separated windows, and corner pilasters rising to an entablature. Above thus is a fully pedimented gable, with a triangular diamond-pane window at its center. The front entrance is located at the eastern end of the ell, flanked by pilasters and topped by a gabled pediment. A secondary entrance, likely once the main entrance, stands at the crook of the L, sheltered by a simple shed-roof porch with square posts. The interior exhibits original Greek Revival woodwork and finishes throughout.</p><br>
<p>Elijah Kellogg, a native of Portland, attended Bowdoin College, and was called to the ministry by the Congregationalists of the nearby town of Harpswell, who were in the process of building a new church (now known as the Elijah Kellogg Church in his honor). Kellogg was officially the pastor there from 1845 until his death in 1901, although he spent many years at other postings. Kellogg acquired a national reputation for a series of children&#39;s adventure books, based on his life growing up in Maine.</p><br>
<p>The Rop rock shelter is an archaeological site on the Jos Plateau of Nigeria.</p><br>
<p>There are two layers containing artifacts.</p><br>
<p>The first holds large scrapers and backed crescent-shaped stone tools.</p><br>
<p>The later (upper) layer is about 2000 years old, and contains backed microlithic tools and pottery.</p><br>
<p>The shelter is about 50km south of Jos.</p><br>
<p>The site was excavated by Bernard Fagg in 1944.</p><br>
<p>He discovered microliths, fragments of ground stone axes, two bored stones, one grooved stone, rubbed hematites and many potsherds.</p><br>
<p>The lower, undated layer held relatively crude implements, apart from the rough crescents.</p><br>
<p>The later layer held higher-quality microliths, geometrical forms and small points, as well as pottery.</p><br>
<p>This later layer only covers part of the site.</p><br>
<p>A skeleton was also found in a shallow grave, dated to around 25 years BCE</p><br>
<p>From the teeth, it appeared that the owner had lived largely on a starchy, plant-based diet.</p><br>
<p>A single equid tooth was found with the same age based on its position in the stratum.</p><br>
<p>Lake Ngaroto is a peat lake in Waipa District of New Zealand.</p><br>
<p>Located 19 km south of Hamilton and 8 km north-west of Te Awamutu, it has a surface area of 108 ha, making it the largest of the Waipa peat lakes. The lake is hypertrophic, leading to eutrophication with corresponding poor water quality.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Battle of Hingakaka was fought nearby, and the sacred carving Te Uenuku lost at this time. It was re-discovered in 1906, and now resides in the Te Awamutu Museum.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Power boats are banned from the lake, so Lake Ngaroto is popular for sailing and rowing.</p><br>
<p>During the New Zealand Duck Shooting Season (May and June), the lake is used for duck shooting.</p><br>
<p>Waipa District council has constructed a 6km track around the lake, part gravel and part boardwalk. It is popular with walkers and runners and recreational cyclists. There are several public toilets.</p><br>
<p>Washington Street Historic District is a 31 acre historic district in Middletown, Connecticut that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The district is centered on the five-acre Washington Terrace Park. In addition to the park, the district also includes the West Burying Ground and 32 contributing buildings dating from 1752 to 1931 with examples of Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals, Greek Revival, and Late Victorian architecture. The district is mostly linear along Washington Street  bounded on the west by Jackson Street and on the east by Main Street. Some of the buildings in the district are owned by and part of Wesleyan University. and</p><br>
<p>The district includes St. Sebastian Church, which "was built in 1931 by Middletown&#39;s Italian-American masons. Called St. Sebastian, it is similar in design to the Church of St. Sebastian in Melilli, Sicily. With its fluted parapet and two-story design, it is heavily influenced by the Renaissance Revival style." The building that was originally located at 307 Washington Terrace was moved to 172 Washington Street on October 26, 2002, in conformance with approval granted, allowing it to stay within the National Register listing.</p><br>
<p>The University of North Dakota Historic District is a 127 acre area in Grand Forks, North Dakota that was listed as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places on January 13, 2010.</p><br>
<p>The district is located on the University of North Dakota campus and neighboring streets. It includes 56 contributing properties. The area also includes 17 non-contributing buildings and three non-contributing structures.</p><br>
<p>While it is considered to retain a cohesive design, the district demonstrates changes in education from the 1880s, when the campus was first built, through the years after World War II. The district has dates of significance in 1883, 1922, and 1949. Some work within the area was designed by architect Joseph Bell DeRemer. The district includes Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals architecture.</p><br>
